Round Rock sweeps Hutto in volleyball

    — Lauren Gray swatted seven kills and served two aces Monday to lead Round Rock to a sweep of Hutto, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 in a non-district match.

Alex Bellville added six kills and Lauren Aiple notched five aces for the Dragons, who prevailed in a match marred by 27 service errors, including 15 by the winners.

"We played better tonight than we did last weekend in San Antonio. Still getting everyone on the same page offensively," said Dragons coach Diane Watson.

Round Rock led Game 1, 8-6, and broke it open with an 8-2 scoring run featuring kills by Aiple and Bellville, mixed with Hippo return errors.

Down 20-11, Hutto had a late rally on two aces and a kill by Stephanie Austin before the Dragons closed out the game.

Hutto led Game 2, building a 21-17 lead, but a mishandled free ball for a side out opened the door for the Dragons.

Round Rock scored the next seven points on a pair of Aiple aces and a block by Macy Wilson, followed by a kill by Trisha Langley.

Round Rock took a 14-12 lead in Game 3 , then opened up a five-point lead and closed out the match.

The host Dragons improved to 4-2 while the Hippos fell to 3-8 on the season.

Coach Diane Watson's Lady Dragons got their season started off on the right foot Tuesday with a win over Copperas Cove at home in three games.

The 25-20, 29-27, 25-16, sweep of the Lady Dawgs - a team that won 33 games a year ago and features District 12-5A MVP setter Amy Rosenbaum - was made possible by an all-around strong team performance.

District 16-5A Newcomer of the Year Trisha Langley looked ready to improve on last season, notching four aces, a block and dishing out 14 assists in what Watson has to hope will become a routine performance.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Aiple led the team in assists with 21 and was big on the defensive side of the net as well with 22 digs.

Lauren Cote had a team-high 31 digs and Anna Hamilton had 22 to go along with four aces. Six-foot middle blocker Lauren Gray chipped in with four aces and a block.

The team travels to the S.A. Northside tournament this weekend before returning home Aug. 16 to play Hutto.

    Volleyball teams hit the court

Football may be King in Texas but if that is so then volleyball is an apt and able Queen. And unlike her husband who forces us to wait two more weeks until we can see a real game, Her Majesty - just and merciful as she is - is already gracing us with her presence.

That's right ladies and gentleman, the 2010 volleyball season has begun and for you Central Texas fanatics, there is plenty to look forward to from your local squads.

Starting out with the always ultra-completive teams from Round Rock ISD, where the Deans of Williamson County volleyball Diane Watson and Kate Zora keep things interesting, it looks to be another solid year for Round Rock schools.

Watson's Round Rock Lady Dragons are expected to make a full recovery from last year's disappointing and injury-riddled season, thanks a great deal to the return of District 16-5A Newcomer of the Year Trisha Langley and a pair of six-foot middle blockers Annie Russian and Lauren Gray. And Zora's Westwood Lady Warriors are still expected to have a shot at defending their league title despite graduating 10 seniors following a 40-6 campaign last year, but it is upstart Stony Point that is generating perhaps the most buzz early in the season.

Fresh off its first winning season ever coach Jayson Langman's team returns five starters including Eboni Godfrey, a first-team all-district selection in 2009, and the aerial-dominating undisputed leader of the team. Already ranked in the top 10 by some organizations, expect the Lady Tigers to improve on their 24-19 record from last season.

McNeil might not seem quite as exciting as the other three Round Rock ISD squads on paper but coach Karen Huffman has quietly put her squad back together after major losses following some successful seasons a couple of years back.

Senior blocker Kasey Decker will lead the Lady Mavs. At, 6-1, she is the team's captain and led Central Texas in blocks in 2009. Junior Abby Zipoy (5-10) is also back to help give McNeil and strong outside game along with senior Alex Hendee.

Down the road in Hutto Janiece Nelson is trying to rebuild a program that has lost 15 seniors over the last two seasons. Class 4A regional quarterfinalists in 2009 with a 24-20 record, the Hippos will look to extend their three-decade long streak of reaching the playoffs with a young and inexperienced team paced by 5-10 junior setter Macie Walker and 6-foot middle blocker Elissa Stanton.

Closer to home Round Rock Christian Academy continues to excel under former Lady Dragon and Watson protégé Susan Hart who has led the team to the postseason in each of her four years with the program. Thanks to sisters Kelsey and Mallory Blauser, both among the top players in Central Texas in any classification, the team will likely be there again.
